Job Title: School Maintenance Supervisor

Reports To: Operations Manager/Executive Director

 

Job Summary:

The School Maintenance Supervisor oversees the maintenance, repair, and overall upkeep of school facilities, grounds, and equipment. This role ensures a safe, clean, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors by coordinating daily maintenance activities, supervising staff, and ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintenance Operations:

• Plan, schedule, and oversee maintenance, repairs, and renovation projects for buildings, equipment, and grounds.
• Perform inspections to identify issues with plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, lighting, and structural integrity.
• Ensure timely response to work orders and maintenance requests from staff and administrators.
• Maintain records of maintenance activities, warranties, and equipment service logs.

2. Staff Supervision:

• Recruit, train, and supervise maintenance personnel, custodians, and groundskeepers.
• Assign and monitor tasks, ensuring timely and high-quality completion.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
• Ensure staff compliance with safety procedures, including the proper use of equipment and tools.

3. Safety and Compliance:

• Implement and enforce safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
• Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety standards.
• Manage inventory of cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment, ensuring availability and proper use.
• Oversee pest control, fire safety systems, and emergency preparedness measures.

4. Budget and Planning:

• Assist in preparing and managing the maintenance budget, including cost estimates for projects and repairs.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and suppliers for specialized services or purchases.
• Monitor and optimize energy usage to reduce costs and promote sustainability.

5. Communication and Collaboration:

• Work closely with school administrators, faculty, and staff to address facility-related needs.
• Provide regular updates on maintenance schedules, issues, and project progress.
• Represent the maintenance department during meetings and audits.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or certification in facilities management or a related field preferred.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in building maintenance or a related role, with at least 2 years in a supervisory position.

Skills and Competencies:

• Strong knowledge of building systems (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical) and general maintenance practices.
• Proficiency in using maintenance software and tools.
• Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.
• Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical documents.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective team management and stakeholder collaboration.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
• Capability to stand, walk, and perform manual tasks for extended periods.
• Comfortable working in varying environmental conditions (indoor and outdoor).

Work Environment:

 

This position is based at a school campus and involves regular interaction with students, staff, and visitors. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to address emergencies or oversee special projects.
